Thompson Island Outward Bound approached me with two exciting opportunities to share their mission with a wider audience. Their focus on boosting academic success and fostering personal growth through free, experiential learning programs on one of Boston Harbor’s islands naturally lent itself to rich visual storytelling.
Opportunity: Their team had recently moved into a new office in Boston’s Innovation & Design Building, a space featuring expansive glass walls that offered little privacy from passing work neighbors and their guests. These windows offered the only source of natural light, so the challenge was to balance privacy with openness and brightness.
Innovation & Design Building, Boston Seaport
Solution: I designed translucent decals that were sized to cover just the central part of the tall window walls, allowing light to pass above and below them. The yellow color warmed up the office space while creating a sense of privacy. The illustrated designs told the Outward Bound Thompson Island story—capturing the spirit of adventure, learning, and community for passers-by.
Thompson Island Event Venue
Opportunity: To help generate revenue, Outward Bound hosted special events including weddings and business retreats on a part of Thompson Island disconnected from the buildings and structures used by their student program. They realized they were missing an important opportunity to share their work with potential donors.
Solution: I created a floor-to-ceiling mural for placement in a high-traffic hallway. Adopting the style of a typical seaside tourist map, I created custom illustrations and leveraged photography to capture the highlights of the program.
